The AURING Society
AURING is a non-profit making society, active in the upper March-Thaya-Auen - at the centre of which is the 'vogel.schau.plätze' Hohenau-Ringelsdorf. Our aim is to maintain, care for, and study the vogel.schau.plätze, which is habitat for more than 230 bird species, for naturalists and ornithologists both near and far.

The society was formed in 1996 by Rudi Machacek, Martin Rössler and Thomas Zuna-Kratky. The following focuses are the basis of the society's work:

Research - ornithological research work, maintaining the ringing station.

Nature protection - Management of the vogel.schau.plätzen, taking care of the bordering floodplain forests, creating a positive attitude towards our immediate environment.

Public work - Organisation of excursions, school projects and talks, publishing relevant documentation of our research work.

Regional development- Supporting nature-tourism, effective presentation of the national importance of the area.

Voluntary workers

In the cause of the nature protection work at the vogel.schau.plätzen (management operation, laying pipelines etc.) we are dependent on the help of the society members on the site. One particular challenge was the construction of the ringing station in the spring of 1999, which was planned and created by the society, and employed a good 20 helpers in total.

The work of the ringing station is particularly labour-intensive: each week, besides the ringing leader, an additional 2-4 helpers are needed. Over 90 people from various countries (including Hungary, Portugal, Denmark and Jordan) have helped come to grips with the work!

Many people have helped us by supplying heavy machinery, such as mowers, chippers and bulldozers. We would particularly like to mention the firms Poyss, Kucharovitz and Mr. Blattner. The photographers who have let us use their excellent pictures for information and advertising have also been very helpful, especially Hans Pribitzer, Oldrich Mikulica, Alois Thaler, Franz Hahn and Vera Schröpfer.

Support us

The AURING society is dependent upon the help of private persons for its various jobs in the areas of research, bird protection and public work. If you approve of our work and would like to support the society, there are a number of different possibilities:

As a member

Members of the AURING sociey receive regular information about our work, the activities of the society, including the monthly AURING-walks, bicycle and canoe tours and our talks, along with the monthly bird news. Membership costs € 22.- for full members, and € 8.- for students. Send an informal registration form to the AURING society (e-mail: info@auring.at), or transfer an initial membership payment with your name and address (and a note to the bank!) to the account number 41005702110 of the Erste Bank (sort code 20111).

As a supporting member

For a minimum donation of € 8.- per month, you can become a supporting member of the AURING society.

As a sponsor

The various jobs of the society also include such expensive tasks as the management of the Anandebecken with heavy machinery, the erection of information signs and the manufacture of products such as books, videos, bird identification CDs and so on. If you wish to support this work as a sponsor, and thus be advertised in the area of the vogel.schau.plätze with its many visitors, then please get in touch with the society!

As an active worker

Voluntary work is one of the most important ways of supporting the society's work! Without the various help from members and supporters we wouldn't be able to cope with our extensive work. It is possible to help with this work in any of the following ways:

Physical management work: For the bird-orientated management of the Anlandebecken we require helpers for pipe-laying, reed-cutting, uprooting bushes and so on. It is particularly helpful if you can support us with special machinery such as motorised scythes or tractors with chippers, mowers etc. Please let the society know when and how it would be possible for you to help and we will communicate when we have solid plans.

Society work: We also need support with the office work of the society, for instance with sending post, copying annual reports etc. Please inform us when it would be possible for you to help.

Bird recording: Records from your visits to the vogel.schau.plätzen or in the surrounding March-Thaya-Auen can have a great deal of importance for the scientific knowledge of the area. As even experts may miss things, your observations make an important supplement. Please send us your records, including the exact details of date, site and birds seen, as well as any other interesting animals, to Thomas Zuna-Kratky.

Working at the ringing station: Another special job is working at the ringing station itself, which runs from the end of June until the end of October. Throughout this time we need helpers with an interest in birds who can work at the station for a minimum of four days (Friday to Monday). The jobs involved include ringing birds, bird counting, general site management and the daily station work. Those interested in registering should write to the society or contact the coordinator, Thomas Zuna-Kratky.

As a visitor to the vogel.schau.plätze

Not least through a visit to the vogel.schau.plätze can you show your interest, make use of our offers and enjoy the varied birdlife in an attractive landscape!
